Formed in 2016 Lisa Beat and The Liars are an Italian band from Ancona. They play a set list of original arrangements rooted in the Rhythm and Blues and Rock'n'Roll of the early '60s, following the "Mersey Beat" style played at the Cavern Club in Liverpool.
The Band
Lisa Beat - Vocals Frankie - Bass, Vocals Steve Martini - Guitar, Farfisa Organ and Backing Vocals Miguél “The Captain” - Lead Guitar Simon - Drums
Track by Track:
Gimme Another Try The first track opens with a slightly distorted guitar and then launches into a Beatles style Rickenbacker led groover with a ‘Girl Cant Help it vibe’. Harmony vocals and a big ol’ dash of sixties reverb add just the right touch of authenticity.
Sometimes Fire up the Lava lamp baby we’re off! This number blends a Pekinpah pinch of western film guitar with a psychedelic vintage groove. But wait, is that the spacey warble of a theremin adding a touch of Star Trek fab in the background? It just might be!
Face To Face Heart To Heart
This is the only cover on the E.P. and was first released in 1982 by Berlin based pop synth duo ‘Twins’. Lisa and the boys have taken the original and very much done their own thing choosing to open with booming drums and a bouncy semi acoustic bass line evolving into a surfy western style number that feels like it’s jumped straight out of a sixties movie (camera up on a sun drenched Italian hillside zooming to a stylish chic in an open top sports car, perfect lipstick, hair blowing in the wind etc). The synth melody line of the original has been replaced with echoing guitar and the whole thing is a stylish blend of the sixties and the eighties.
Summary
This Is the second E.P. (The first was the neatly titled ‘Sheena Is a Beat Rocker‘) released by Lisa Beat and the Liars. Both are available on 7” vinyl from Chaputa Records.
The band set out to produce original material reminiscent of the swinging sixties and they absolutely succeed! Fans of the Fab Four and that vintage beat will dig this groovy sound.
