The Voodoo Fukkerz describe their music as raw, gritty sounds with hypnotic rhythms, creating a unique fusion of dark blues, psycho rock'n'roll, and swampy Voodoo vibes. Hailing from Italy ’2345 EP’ is the bands 5th release and comes in an excellent cover designed by Dast.

The Band Are:

Dario:   Lead Guitar and Vox

Volpe:  Rhythm Guitar

Ludo:   Double Bass

Carlo:   Drums

1/ THE FLAMINGO ACCIDENT: The EP opens with a great South American/Spaghetti Western sounding riff. The vocals are gritty, full of reverb and backed by a lead guitar which tracks the melody. The lyrics tell us of a nightmare scenario and each verse closes with the great line: ‘Wear Pink, Fly High’. Don’t be fooled by their image, the double bass and their album cover as this is far from ‘standard’ psychobilly. There is a level of creativity that differentiates The VFs from many other other bands and in doing so also widens their appeal to followers of many other genres.

2/ LITTLE DEVIL:  Little Devil opens up with a nicely delivered traditional R’n’R guitar intro  leading us into a deep south grinding rhythm….. Get ready to tap your foot and rock your head! (trust me, you will). The vocals are powerful and again laden with reverb and subtly accompanied with plenty of ‘tremelo’ guitar, which is no bad thing. This is a very interesting song with a few surprises, watch out for the middle break which almost feels like it comes from a different song but it really works well. great stuff.

3/ DEATH KILLER:  Death Killer continues to demonstrate the experimental nature and ultimately the unique attraction of the VFs. It starts with vocals and guitar alternating or responding to each other which is extremely catchy before leading into a multi vocal chorus ‘She’s Killing Me, She’s Killing Me’ which is very different to what we have heard so far but also very effective. Half way through the music changes with a totally unexpected break incorporating initially a bit of ‘Accelerando’ (look it up) followed by some brilliant and heavily trem’ed guitar, before the multi vocal chorus brings us back to the song. I love this.

4/ VOODOO MIST:  Prepare yourself for quite a shift in sound with Voodoo Mist, not only do they change vocalist but we are treated to a significant style change. Voodoo Mist has a 60s garage feel, think B-Movie soundtrack and people having fun dancing on a beach before something ‘spooky’ happens. The willingness of the band however to provide us with mid-song surprises does not change just because the sound style has changed (watch out for the Bongos). This is an excellent track, well written, well delivered with instrumental and vocal arrangements combining very well indeed. In my opinion this is the outstanding track on the EP. Listen out for the great ending.

5/ NEEDLE STUCK IN MY LEG: We are treated to almost of 1 minute of some very listenable instrumental music before the song really kicks in. This is more traditional psychobilly with a very catchy chorus and the slap bass really playing a prominent role. I really like this song and although I have never seen the band play I could imagine that this would would go down really well in their live set.

6/ RIGHT TWICE: Right Twice is a lively punk rock composition that is far from straight forward in terms of composition and would not sound out of place alongside early Dead Kennedys. As with other tracks on the EP the VFs add different layers to this song keeping you on your toes whilst also maintaining their own musical identity.

7/ FLASHBACK IN PINK: The EP started with The Flamingo Accident and the VFs chose to close off the EP with a variation on the track. Flashback in Pink is a (sort-of) instrumental and  (in my opinion) a homage to the music you would typically hear in Sergio Leoni’s Spaghetti Westerns. This is a great way to close down an EP that has entertained us with so many different sounds, so many different genres and of course kept us on our toes with those unexpected surprises which make The Voodoo Fukkerz as uniquely appealing as they are.

SUMMARY: This was my first experience of the VFs and it left me curious, wanting to hear more. They are a band who definitely have their own sound but still break all the rules by creating each song with a completely different structural approach. This is very refreshing, bold and leads to why I look forward to hearing future projects from this band.

RECOMMENDATION: This is not traditional Rock’n’Roll, this is a blend of Punk Rock, Psychobilly…ish, Dark Mood Tunes which will not fail to surprise you as you listen to each track. it’s appeal will probably not stretch to Rock and Roll purists but for lovers of Punk, Goth, New Wave or Psychobilly music I would recommend that you dig into your pockets and give 2345 by The Voodoo Fukkerz a listen.
